An Exercise In Futility: Chapter One

Rating: PG-13
Warning(s): none
Pairing(s): none
Disclaimer: Stargate: SG-1 and all related characters and ideas are the property of MGM. Star Trek: Voyager and all related characters and ideas are the property of Paramount. No money changed hands and no copyright infringement is intended or implied.
Summary: While examining an alien device, Voyager encounters a Borg vessel that had come to study the same device. But when the device activates, both ships are transported into unknown space, and encounter a ship named Prometheus, a race called Replicators, and a whole lot of trouble.
Spoilers: Stargate: SG-1 through the end of season 8 is fair game, although this is set in season 7 shortly after “Grace.” Prior to “Death Knell,” though. Star Trek…shortly after “Counterpoint.”
Author's Notes: The idea behind this story is mostly, “Hey, wouldn’t it be so incredibly cool if the Replicators and the Borg got into a fight!?!” Which it would.

There is a tiny bit of very slight AU (little, itty, bitty, speck) in that I am including Cameron Mitchell and Carson Beckett in this story, even though they technically didn't meet SG-1 until later in the timeline.

And for Star Trek… Everything is up for grabs (barring DIS or anything involving JJ Abrams, all of which are Emphatically Not Canon, as far as I am concerned). Anything about Vulcans in ENT that contradicts previously established canon from TOS through VOY is likewise tossed.

Stuck In The Mud

Rating: PG-13
Warning(s): minor language, graphic violence
Pairing(s): slight Tim Drake/OFC
Disclaimer: “Batman” and all related characters and concepts are the property of DC Comics, Warner Brothers, or both. No money changed hands and no copyright infringement is intended or implied.
Summary: Serial murders in Gotham are not unusual. Making friends during the investigation is a bit new. Whether you can keep them when the investigation is over? Tim isn’t sure he’s old enough to have figured that one out yet.
Spoilers: Everything is fair game.
Continuity: Direct references to the Batman: The Animated Series episode "Growing Pains." I am assuming you have watched it and know how it goes. I am assuming you will not be confused by references to that episode that don't rehash the whole plot of it as a refresher.
Series: The DC Stories
Author's Notes: Unlike Timm and Dini, I do not have to write the level of violence down for the children in the audience. Expect dead people.

Black Sails, White Sails

Rating: PG-13
Warning(s): discussion of theoretical major character death
Pairing(s): none
Disclaimer: Star Trek and all attendant characters and concepts are the property of Paramount Studios. No money changed hands and no copyright infringement is intended or implied.
Summary: First, suppose that the famous ship sailed by the hero Theseus in a great battle has been kept in a harbour as a museum piece. As the years go by some of the wooden parts begin to rot and are replaced by new ones. After a century or so, all of the parts have been replaced. Is the "restored" ship still the same object as the original?

Second, suppose that each of the removed pieces were stored in a warehouse, and after the century, technology develops to cure their rotting and enable them to be put back together to make a ship. Is this "re-constructed" ship the original ship? And if so, is the restored ship in the harbour still the original ship too?

Or...how do transporters really work?
Spoilers: Everything is up for grabs (barring DIS or anything involving JJ Abrams, all of which are Emphatically Not Canon, as far as I am concerned). Anything about Vulcans in ENT that contradicts previously established canon from TOS through VOY is likewise tossed.
Author's Notes: The title is a reference to the sails on Theseus' ship in Greek mythology.

The Hierarchy Of Command

Rating: PG-13
Warning(s): none
Pairing(s): none
Disclaimer: Star Trek: Voyager and all attendant characters and concepts are the property of Paramount Studios. No money changed hands and no copyright infringement is intended or implied.
Summary: When half of Voyager’s crew, including the entire senior staff, are taken prisoner by the Hierarchy, the remaining crewmembers must step up and save their superiors and their ship.
Spoilers: Set slightly before “Child’s Play,” but the only spoiler there is that there is a science fair for the Voyager kids. Extremely generalized and brief whole-episode spoiler for "Tinker, Tenor, Doctor, Spy."
Author's Notes: I essentially wrote this to give all the secondary characters that I have always liked a chance to be the stars of the story for a change. I love the primary characters, don’t get me wrong. Janeway is tied with Spock for my favorite Trek character of all time, in fact. But it’s nice to get off the beaten track, sometimes.

I relied heavily on Memory Alpha for references. And Memory Beta for determining how much official, but slightly-less-than-entirely-canonical stuff I was going to use.

White Flag

Rating: PG-13
Warning(s) : none
Pairing(s) : none
Disclaimer: Star Trek and all attendant characters and concepts are the property of Paramount Studios. No money changed hands and no copyright infringement is intended or implied.
Summary: Spock and McCoy have a conversation after their experiences on Platonius. It does not end with an argument.
Spoilers: Everything is up for grabs (barring DIS or anything involving JJ Abrams, all of which are Emphatically Not Canon, as far as I am concerned). Most specifically, though, “Plato’s Stepchildren.”
Author's Notes: I recently re-watched “Plato’s Stepchildren” and…that episode is tough.

This story is written with the assumption that you have also watched “Plato’s Stepchildren” and know what happened in it. The episode is on Netflix if you need a refresher.

Ever To Conquer, Never To Yield

Rating: PG
Warning(s) : theft, armed robbery, minor violence, minor swearing
Pairing(s) : none
Tags: alternate universe – canon fusion, alternate universe – canon divergence, casefic
Disclaimer: All copyrighted characters, situations, settings, and events belong to DC Comics, Warner Brothers, the CW, or some combination thereof (I think that’s everybody). No money has changed hands, and no copyright infringement is intended or implied.
Summary: He was a superhero, and he was looking forward to a college football game. Bart Allen had officially lost every claim to coolness he had ever had. Granted, a lot of other people seemed to be looking forward to it, too. Including, unfortunately, some maybe-speedsters who were definitely-criminals.
Continuity: This is not in continuity with any comics or tv shows. It belongs with the DC series I've got up. Just read the fics tagged for Bart Allen in the listed order and you'll have the required backstory.

The Invasive Species

Rating: PG-13

Summary: When the alien invasion finally came, they effortlessly defeated humanity. They were expecting military resistance. They weren’t counting on bears.

The Hundred-Point Child

Rating: PG-13
Warning(s): child abuse mentions, child neglect mentions
Summary: Couples receive “parent points”, which they can use to purchase their children. Most parents wait for a few thousand, but the Carsons didn't want to wait. They chose to buy the cheaper, hundred-point child.
Author's Notes: Written in response to this prompt on Tumblr.

This story got a big reception on Tumblr. Huge. Much bigger than I expected. I wrote it in mid-December 2016, in a fit of inspiration, over the course of an hour or so. I made some minor edits (the text is still ~99.5% the same as it was when I first banged it out) just for tidiness and clarity and present it here.

The Transporter Problem

Rating: PG-13
Warning(s): swearing
Summary: Based on this prompt: "Every time you teleport, your body is destroyed and instantly recreated at the destination. Heaven and Hell are struggling to cope with the billions of duplicated souls created every year, so a bipartisan emergency meeting has been called to sort out the problem."
Author’s Notes: The demons in this story are demons. They use the bad words. And blaspheme a little. Because that’s how demons are (actually, actual demons blaspheme a lot, but I didn’t think that was necessary for the story).

Christmas Untitled

Author’s Note: This story doesn’t actually have a prompt to it. You’ll just have to read it and find out what it’s about. It is Christmas-y, but that’s all you get. :)
Warnings for child abuse mentions. Mostly general, all non-graphic, but they are in there.

Bounty Cops

Rating: PG-13
Warning(s): violence, major character injury, background character death, swearing
Summary: Rather than being dispatched by a dispatcher, police officers use a bounty system where officers can pick up missions from a constantly updated bounty board. The missions range from: “noise complaint, $20”, to “domestic abuse, $150”, to “bank robbery in progress, $5000.”
Author's Notes: Based on the prompt in the summary.

Rogues, Inc.

Rating: PG-13
Warning(s) : theft, armed robbery, minor violence, minor swearing
Pairing(s) : none
Tags: alternate universe – canon fusion, alternate universe – canon divergence, alternate universe – they don’t die, casefic
Disclaimer: All copyrighted characters, situations, settings, and events belong to DC Comics, Warner Brothers, the CW, or some combination thereof (I think that’s everybody). No money has changed hands, and no copyright infringement is intended or implied.
Summary: Being hauled out of the Speed Force and thrust back into the world was the best. Reuniting with his sister was even better (although it did involve a slight amount of being punched in the face). Captain Cold was ready to take on the world again. …Except for the tiny problem where he didn't want to be a bad guy anymore, but he didn't know how to be anything else.
Spoilers: Whole episode spoilers for Batman: the Animated Series episode “The Terrible Trio.” Bits and mentions of significant Arrow!verse events involving Leonard Snart, Mick Rory, Lisa Snart, and Hartley Rathaway. Most of the other spoilers are for events in this series. Erm…I guess if you didn’t know Bart was Impulse or something?
Continuity: Canon compliance for Arrow!verse ends at Legends season 2, Arrow season 5, The Flash season 3. Supergirl is totally disregarded (she exists in this series, but not as the Arrow!verse version). Otherwise, this is my own AU that is more Dini-verse than anything else, but isn’t 100% in continuity with any existing canons for anything.
Author's Notes: Written for NaNoWriMo 2017. (Didn’t win. Too short, and didn’t finish on time. But that’s where this got started.)

I am an American, writing about American characters (with the exception of a brief cameo by Julian Albert). I have tried to make a note of cultural references that may be a little more obscure at the end, but if something befuddles you, drop me a comment or whatever and I’ll happily add a note in the author’s comments when I get a moment.

Nine Circles

Rating: PG-13
Warning(s): violence, minor character death, death themes, hell themes, general dark and unhappy atmosphere
Summary: The Grim Reaper carries a scythe, and the Devil has a pitchfork. When your parents say your dog "went away to a big farm", they're not being metaphorical.

The Truth Spirit

Rating: PG-13
Warning(s): attempted murder
Pairing(s):
Summary: The flat Earth society has started a cult that sacrifices people by throwing them off the edge of the Earth. This is what happened to their first victim.
Author's Notes: To give a little set-up. I did some spit-balling with a friend of mine on what sort of a state the world would have to be in for a Flat Earth Society to gain the kind of traction they would need to do this sort of thing. And our conclusion was that not only was modern society toast, but most of the connection to previous knowledge would also have to be toast. Not only no internet, but no library, either. And considering ancient people were well-aware the world was round, the government system our Flat Earth Society runs would have be basically Communism, and they would have to heavily suppress anyone who got out of line. The animism is more speculative, but it suits the world. So, there you are.

Please forgive the super dumb title. I'm trying to write every week, plus work full time and titles are hard even when you do have time to, like, not be dumb.

Unadulterated

Rating: PG
Warning(s): none
Pairing(s): OMC/OFC
Summary: You start getting suspicious of your s/o when they start coming home late and have a feeling they might be cheating on you, one night you decide to follow them and find out they are one of the best superheroes of the century.
Author's Notes: Written in response to this prompt.

Unadulterated )

*~*~*

Author's Notes: "Unadulterated" is an SAT word that means "in a pure form" or "not mixed with anything." In this case, it also refers to the fact that the solution to the mystery is a marriage with no adultery occurring, or an "unadulterated" one.

Solve For X

Summary: Ray Palmer was good at math. Even when math was people. People were just…really complicated math. But that was okay, because he was good at math, so complicated equations didn't scare him. He was still working on figuring out the Unified Theory of Mick Rory, though.
Rating: G
Characters/Pairings: Ray Palmer, Mick Rory, Bart Allen, Martin Stein, Rip Hunter, Sara Lance, Jefferson "Jax" Jackson, Amaya Jiwe, Cisco Ramon, Leonard Snart, Barry Allen, Nate Heywood
Warnings/Tags: None.
Spoilers: Parts of Legends Of Tomorrow seasons 1 and 2. Season 3 is presumed not to exist. General Arrow!verse spoilers. The “Invasion!” storyline did not happen in this universe, though, the major result of which is that Mick doesn’t know Barry’s name. Minor references to DCAU things, like the Justice League.
Disclaimer: "The Flash," and the "Legends of Tomorrow," and all related characters and situations are the property of DC Comics, Warner Brothers, the CW, or some combination of those entities. No money changed hands and no copyright infringement is intended or implied.
Author’s Notes: THIS IS NOT AN EXPLICITLY ARROW-VERSE STORY! Do not assume that it is, you will be very confused. Ray Palmer is the Arrow-verse Palmer, but Impulse is more-or-less the comics version. And the dominant timeline for this series is the DCAU Timm/Dini-verse.

Acting On Impulse

Summary: Hearing Bart Allen toss off that he didn’t really have a team was doing things to Bruce’s blood pressure. Maybe it was that it was so casual. Somehow, it felt wrong for a boy that enthusiastic to be that accustomed to being alone.
Rating: PG
Characters/Pairings: Bruce Wayne, Bart Allen, Tim Drake, Dick Grayson, Alfred Pennyworth
Warnings/Tags: None. This one's pretty fluffy.
Spoilers: All of TAS is fair game.
Disclaimer: “Batman” and all related characters and situations are the property of DC Comics, Warner Brothers, or both. No money changed hands and no copyright infringement is intended or implied.
Author’s Notes: I was not, initially, going to post this. I wrote it just to get it out of my head. Then I realized it lays some ground-work for another story in this…series or something?…that this is part of, so here 'tis.
